FAQ.

What is Subframe?

Subframe is a design tool for your codebase. It lets you explore ideas with AI, refine them with direct control, and hand them off as code. Your agent sees what you see: the canvas and your running app.

What you're seeing here is our inspiration MCP server, a standalone tool that gives your coding agent curated design inspiration. You can use it without using the rest of Subframe.

How does the inspiration MCP work?

Once it's installed, your agent can search a hand-picked library of beautiful real websites before it designs. It looks at their layout, type, and color, then designs something new for your project in that direction.

How does this stop my site from looking AI-generated?

AI-designed sites look alike because models learned from the average of the web, and most inspiration sites collect that same average. Pointing your agent at them just gets you more of it.

Subframe's library is curated by designers to break that pattern. Every site is picked because it stands apart from the typical AI look, and we run benchmarks on real people's preferences to check our picks. The library changes as taste does: we add new sites and prune ones that start to feel common, so your agent always works from what looks fresh now.

How much does it cost?

It's free. Inspiration search works on every plan, including Free, and doesn't use AI credits. You just need a Subframe account to sign in.

What should I use it for?

Landing pages, marketing sites, and portfolios: anywhere you want a page that doesn't look like every other AI-generated site. Inspiration for in-app screens like dashboards and settings is coming soon.

Which agents does it work with?

Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and any other agent that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP.

Do I need to know design to use it?

No. Describe what you're building and ask your agent to find inspiration on Subframe. It picks the references for you.

Will my site copy the sites it references?

No. Your agent uses the references for direction, like a designer pinning up a mood board, and builds an original page around your own content.
